When conservation supports the local economy.
I first learned about Huckins Farm when I bought their incredible marinated herbed feta cheese at E.M. Heath’s in Center Harbor. What a nice surprise to find out that the very same farm wanted to sell a conservation easement to Lakes Region Conservation Trust!
When I visited the farm in person I was blown away by the views. The land is gorgeous.
But it gets better. Throughout conversations with the landowner, the LRCT Lands Committee, project partners, LRCT staff, and contractors, it became clear that the project is so much more than saving a scenic piece of land.
The farm has important wildlife habitat and ranks highly for its climate resiliency, is a leader in the local agricultural community (as told to me by my local dairy, Matty Huckins is the person to call with questions about dairy cows), employs community members, teaches local schools about farming, sells dairy products all over the State of New Hampshire, and has been operating as a farm since the 1700s.
As we are nearing the completion of this project, and looking forward to supporting further investment into the farm through the funds from the purchase of the conservation easement, I think back on something Steve Whitman of Resilience Planning and Design LLC told me:
It is always good when there are “multiple reasons” reasons for doing a project.
There are so many wonderful potential projects to work on throughout New England, it can be overwhelming! It helps to remember to focus on those projects that lie in the nexus of supporting a thriving sustainable economy, a scenic and healthy landscape, cultural educational experiences to our community, and delicious local foods.
